Ben Solo performed the most personal sacrifice by murdering his father, Han Solo, in cold blood. Anakin Skywalker, however, was an accomplice in Mace Windu's death by cutting off his saber hand and letting the emperor destroy him. For example, Count Dooku opted for a direct approach when he murdered his master, Sifo-Diyas. In Star Wars, a major part of Sith initiation is a test of devotion known as "The Sacrifice." The rules define the act as either directly killing someone close to them or facilitating their end. That instability is why the saber has a crossguard. Ben was filled with so much emotion that his bleeding cracked the crystal. Its make-up is corrupted by Dark Side energy and inevitably gives it its red glow.
